Which No Stud TV Mount Is Right for You?

Not all no-stud installations are the same. Your TV's weight and how you want it to move determines which mount makes sense.

Fixed (flat) mounts hold the TV flush against the wall — no tilt, no swivel. Lowest profile, lowest stress on the drywall anchors. Best choice if your TV is directly at seated eye level and you don't need to adjust the viewing angle.

Tilt mounts allow 5°–15° of downward tilt, which is useful if you're mounting slightly higher than eye level — above a console, for example, or in a bedroom above a dresser. Tilt puts modest additional stress on anchors versus fixed, but remains safe within rated weight limits.

Full-motion (articulating) mounts extend the TV away from the wall on an arm. In a no-stud installation, the arm creates leverage that multiplies the force on your anchors when extended. If you need a full-motion mount and cannot hit a stud, use a mount rated for at least 2× your TV's weight, and favor a shorter arm extension to minimize leverage. For TVs over 65 inches, we recommend hitting at least one stud or using a French cleat for full-motion installations.

Weight and TV Size Compatibility

TV screen size Typical TV weight Recommended mount type
32"–42" 15–30 lbs Fixed, tilt, or full-motion
43"–55" 30–55 lbs Fixed or tilt preferred
56"–65" 50–85 lbs Fixed or tilt — full-motion with caution
66"–75" 70–100 lbs Fixed only — confirm system weight rating
76"–85" 90–130 lbs French cleat recommended at this weight

Works in Apartments and Rentals

No-stud mounts leave minimal wall damage — four 1/2" holes — and remove cleanly. Most landlords accept this as standard. Patch with standard drywall compound before move-out. Do not substitute the included anchor hardware with generic alternatives purchased separately — the system weight rating covers the included hardware as a unit.

Wall Types That Work (and Don't)

No stud TV mounts use toggle bolt anchors and require hollow drywall to function correctly. They work in:

  • Standard 1/2" drywall
  • 5/8" drywall (common in newer construction and fire-rated walls)

They do not work in:

  • Plaster walls (pre-1950s homes — plaster cracks under toggle expansion)
  • Tile or stone surfaces
  • Brick or masonry (requires masonry anchors — see our TV mounts collection for options)
  • Hollow metal stud walls (requires specialized cavity anchors)

If you're unsure of your wall type, drill a small test hole with a 1/4" bit. If the drill meets hard resistance immediately, it's plaster or masonry — not standard drywall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do no stud TV mounts actually work?

Yes, when used within their rated weight capacity and installed in standard 1/2" or 5/8" drywall. The failures people encounter with "no stud" installations almost always come from using generic toggle bolts rated per-anchor rather than a purpose-built system with a certified total weight rating. Mount-It! no stud TV mounts are tested and rated as a complete system — mount hardware plus anchor hardware together.

How much weight can a no stud TV mount hold?

Mount-It! no stud TV mounts are rated for TVs up to 100 lbs depending on the model. The key number to check is the system-level weight rating (not just the mount or just the anchor in isolation). A TV weighing 75 lbs needs a system rated for at least 112 lbs — always apply a 1.5× safety margin.

Can I use a no stud TV mount for a 65-inch TV?

Most 65-inch TVs weigh 55–85 lbs. Mount-It! fixed and tilt no stud mounts rated at 100 lbs handle this range comfortably. Use a fixed or tilt mount rather than full-motion for 65-inch TVs in stud-free installations to minimize lateral anchor stress.

Can I use a no stud TV mount for a 75-inch TV?

A 75-inch TV typically weighs 75–110 lbs. At the higher end of that range (90+ lbs), a no stud mount is workable only with a fixed-style mount and a system rated for 130 lbs or more. If your 75" TV exceeds 90 lbs, check the spec sheet for exact weight — and if it's above that threshold, we recommend a French cleat or hitting a single stud if one is available within 8" of your desired position.

Will a no stud mount damage my wall?

Installation requires four 1/2" drill holes. Removal is clean — the toggle wings drop behind the wall and the bolts pull out. Standard drywall compound covers the holes for move-out. No stud mounts cause less wall damage than most picture-hanging anchors people already use.

Is a no stud TV mount safe for a rental apartment?

Yes. No stud mounts are the preferred solution for renters specifically because of the minimal footprint. Four small holes is standard wall use in most leases. If your lease prohibits any drilling, this mount — like all wall mounts — is not appropriate.

What VESA patterns do Mount-It! no stud mounts support?

Mount-It! no stud TV mounts support standard VESA patterns from 75×75mm (small screens) up to 600×400mm (common on 65"–75" TVs). Check your TV's VESA pattern in its spec sheet or the owner's manual before purchasing. Most TVs manufactured after 2010 follow standard VESA spacing.

Do I need a stud finder to install a no stud TV mount?

No. That's the point. A level and a drill are the only tools required. Mark your hole positions, drill straight in, insert the toggle anchors, attach the mounting plate, hang the TV. The anchor hardware bypasses the stud-finding step entirely.
